The Law of Personal Space

Few weeks ago, my eldest Afnan was assigned to write his thoughts on Personal Space. He was quite unsure of the content and how he should do it, so we had a long chat (basically the tips and tricks in writing) which later, I also made a commitment to write about the same topic too. Upon searching and reading, I found that it is quite an interesting topic to discuss.

So Personal Space, what it is?

💜When you first heard of Personal Space, what was the first thing that came out in your mind? Maybe a specific area of interest, maybe a personal safe space, maybe an object you loved?

💜Well, by definition, Personal Space (also known as proxemics) is the amount of space between you and another person that makes you feel comfortable being near that person.

Interestingly, there are four distinct zones of Personal Space which are:

☝Intimate (0-2 ft.)

☝Personal (2-4 ft)

☝Social (4-12 ft.)

☝Public (more than 12 ft.)

If you carefully read the definition, the space will actually vary, isn't it? Quite distinctively dependent on YOU!

💜Who you are as a person, and how comfortable you are with a specific individual.

An individual can be someone you are familiar with, but if he/she doesn't bring comfort to you, the familiarity doesn't really matter. Agree?

💜Doesn't matter which side you are in, both require a lot of senses, thoughtfulness and knowledge will hand a great help.

I was in a situation when I was in a conversation around the people that I was quiet comfortable with, unfortunately the conversation went into something very personal (about me of course) - very uncomfortable topic and I was not happy. I had some thought about it and I actually felt my personal space was intruded and somehow, the zone that perhaps applicable to the people before the conversation happen is no longer applied - I will keep some distance, sincerely 😛

🙆Hence, yes, Personal Space is very relative to trust, and trust has to be earned.

And did you know you may somehow predict how Personal Space matters to people by observing the features on their face?

People with wide forehead, bigger space between the eyes and eyebrows - do you think you take Personal Space seriously?

I actually do! 😘

P/S I will share what Afnan thinks of Personal Space if he is okay sharing okay!

Till then, selamat berpuasa and let's strive for the last 10 days of Ramadhan!

xoxo,
